Do you struggle with foundation that looks cakey, dries out your skin, or makes it too oily? Beauty experts believe that finding the right foundation is about choosing a formula that works with your skin type and complements your natural beauty without causing breakouts or irritation.
With an array of options available in the market, selecting the perfect match can feel overwhelming, says Dr Debeshi, Clinical Cosmetic & Aesthetic Expert Founder of Lueur Aesthetics. “Understanding your skin type and the different foundation formulas can help you achieve a smooth, flawless finish that lasts all day,” she says.
Foundation types and textures
- Liquid foundation:This is one of the most versatile foundations, available in different finishes to suit various skin types.

- Cream foundation: Rich and smooth, cream foundation provides medium to full coverage, making it ideal for dry and mature skin. “It blends easily, giving a hydrated and luminous finish. However, it may feel heavy on oily skin and can make it look shinier,” explains Dr Debeshi.
- Powder foundation:This is a great choice for oily and combination skin, as it helps absorb excess oil and provides a matte finish. However, it’s not suitable for dry or mature skin as it can settle into fine lines and highlight dry patches,” she adds.

- Stick foundation: With its solid, creamy texture, stick foundation is perfect for normal to combination skin. “It provides high coverage, making it great for quick touch-ups. However, those with oily skin might find it too thick,” Dr Debeshi says.
- Tinted moisturiser and serum foundations:Lightweight and hydrating, these are ideal for dry, sensitive, and mature skin. According to Dr Debeshi, they provide sheer coverage while nourishing the skin, making them perfect for everyday use when heavy makeup isn’t needed.
- Mineral foundation: It is available in loose or pressed powder. “It is an excellent choice for sensitive and acne-prone skin. Made with natural minerals, it soothes the skin and prevents irritation while offering light to medium coverage,” she says.
- Tinted sunscreen: For those who prefer a natural look with sun protection, tinted sunscreen is a great alternative. “It provides light coverage while shielding the skin from harmful UV rays. It’s especially beneficial for sensitive and acne-prone skin,” the expert says.

Choosing the right foundation starts with knowing your skin type — oily, dry, combination, sensitive, or acne-prone. “Coverage also matters. Use sheer for a natural look, medium for daily wear, and full coverage for special occasions. Also, look for ingredients that suit your skin’s needs, such as hydrating formulas for dry skin, mattifying ones for oily skin, and mineral-based options for sensitive skin,” suggests Dr Debeshi, addingthattesting the shade on your jawline in natural light is the best way to find the perfect match.
