BUTTE— Asa Williams’ basketball journey has taken him throughout the United States, and now it has led him across the Atlantic Ocean.
Williams’ agency, Tré Sports Management, announced his signing with the Hessing Kangaroos on Sunday, a team in Germany’s ProB League. In an interview with 406 MT Sports on Monday, the former Montana Tech standout said he signed with the team in May.

Williams arrived in Augsburg, Germany last Thursday and is set to begin training camp on Wednesday. The Kangaroos open their season on Sept. 28.
“I’m ecstatic about it,” Williams said. “Coming from Montana Tech and having such a successful two years as a player and finally being able to be recognized by a team, especially all the way in Germany, it’s definitely a great experience.”

The Solon, Ohio native spent two seasons at Tech after playing at three different junior colleges to begin his college career. After winning Frontier Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2022-23, Williams took his game to the next level for his final season and earned first team All-Conference and third team NAIA All-American honors.
The Orediggers compiled a 56-10 overall record and won consecutive Frontier regular season and tournament titles in Williams’ two seasons in Butte.
“Without Montana Tech, I probably wouldn’t have made it this far. Coach (Adam) Hiatt put me on a pedestal to go out and be successful each and every night, and my teammates supported me through it all,” Williams said.
While Williams is adjusting to his new surroundings— it’s his first time in Europe— he hopes a familiar face will make that transition easier.
Caleb Bellach, Williams’ teammate at Tech for the last two years, signed his first professional contract in June with Ehingen Urspring, a division foe of the Kangaroos in Germany’s ProB League. Williams said Bellach will be just a 30-minute drive away, and the Diggers’ old dynamic duo will square off twice in the regular season.
“I’ll be able to meet up with Caleb a lot actually, so it’ll be cool to see him a ton,” Williams said.
Williams has only spent a handful of days in his new home of Augsburg, but he’s been eager to immerse himself into the culture. He said he’s looking forward to trying new foods, learning the language and traveling around Germany and Europe.
With the way people have treated him in his short time there, Williams says “it reminds me a lot of Butte in a sense.”
As for his goals for his first professional season, Williams is utilizing a lesson he learned during his time at Tech.
“One thing I learned from being at Montana Tech is that when you have team success, everything individually will come in behind,” he said.
“First and foremost is winning a championship and everything else will take care of itself in the end.”
After Williams wraps up the season sometime in the spring, he plans to return to Butte to help out with camps in the summer.
While his two years at Tech are just a chapter in his journey, the Mining City holds a special place in Williams’ heart.
“The fact that I got to come to a place and be able to call it home is something I’ll forever cherish. People in Buttewelcomed me with open arms,” he said.
“They didn’t treat me like an athlete, they treated me like I was Asa Williams, a person. That’s something I truly respected. It was bigger than basketball.”
